Leica Calonox 2 Sight: the future of the thermoviewer

Leica presents the two best of any clip-on on the market, for observing and aiming like never before: Calonox 2 Sight and Calonox 2 Sight LRF.

The Calonox 2 Sight LRF perfectly aligns the sighting point with the reticle of the scope and is equipped with an integrated rangefinder. This device offers a large screen and features the most advanced French thermal sensor in a clip-on configuration. It is able to highlight animals in their environment like no other device, thanks to its exceptional depth of field and visual comfort. Made from high-quality materials and entirely designed and manufactured in Germany, the Calonox 2 Sight LRF also includes Leica LIO™ (Leica Image Optimisation) software, the same software used in Leica's famous digital cameras.

Calonox 2 Sight. This thermal Clip-On monocular, which can be mounted on the rifle scope, integrates a Leica rangefinder and uses a new technology that guarantees perfect alignment with the scope reticle. It is the only thermal sight designed and manufactured by Leica entirely in Germany, in cooperation with exclusively European partners. The device is extremely compact and has a large screen that can be used for both observation and aiming, with a technology that allows the entire screen to be viewed even if the viewer is held 15 cm from the eye. The Gasir lens, instead of Germanium, stabilises the focus and offers an unprecedented depth of field. Fully customisable via a specially developed app that can be updated online for years to come, it ensures you always have a state-of-the-art visor. Get ready for an immersive experience in the future of thermal vision for hunting and tracking with the many innovations of the Calonox 2 Sight.

The all-rounder in three points

The following three elements alone are enough to show the superiority of Calonox2 over any other clip-on on the market.

  • The world's first thermal visor totally designed and built in Germany, with exclusively European partners for essential parts.

In an industry where almost all products are created entirely or to a large extent in the Far East or at least outside the EU, Leica's 100 years of experience and legendary attention to detail, materials and quality control of European and German customer culture have already made the difference with the Calonox models, which have dominated the market for high-quality spotting scopes since 2021.

Calonox 2 eliminates any compromises in this respect from the very beginning of its design, which is entirely German and without any eastern partners. The design and manufacture, most of the construction elements are Leica, while the thermal sensor is French (Lynred is known for producing the best in thermal sensors, even in the military field), the GASIR (r) lens is French-Canadian and developed ad hoc for the Calonox 2; even the dedicated APP to manage the Calonox 2 from the smartphone is European and comes from Croatia (Infinum), as Croatian are the Rusan adapters, which have proven their absolute efficiency and reliability with thousands of Calonox.

The difference can immediately be seen in the unique design, essential and elegant; in the handling and ergonomics, with all moving elements smooth and perfect; in the robustness, which comes from the care taken over materials, construction tolerances and assembly. Anyone who is used to using another instrument and encounters a Calonox 2 will perceive this immediately, and even more so over time.

  • First clip-on with integrated Leica rangefinder (LRF version, Laser Range Finder, up to 1200 metres)

Leica invented the hunting rangefinder and binotelemeter more than 30 years ago, and today, more than ever before, it is a leader in this type of product with superior innovation and ballistic capability. It is therefore not surprising that the first thermal clip-on with integrated high quality rangefinder was created by Leica. With 1200 metres of range, it is also the most powerful rangefinder in a thermal viewer, as those who want it integrated will appreciate when purchasing the Calonox View 2 LRF. The rangefinder that equips the Calonox Sight 2 LRF is class zero, and the readout takes place in real time in the instrument's display, while you are observing, a feature that adds to its effectiveness, especially when shooting.

Thus the Calonox 2 Sight LRF's rangefinder aiming frame and distance indication appear on the screen.

The Calonox 2 Sight mounts on the objective of any riflescope and, for the first time in a clip-on, aims exactly where the reticle of the optic aims, thus requiring no collimation with the riflescope. This means that when aiming with the Calonox 2 mounted on the lens, you hit exactly the spot that you would only hit with the scope, whereas in general thermal clip-ons of all makes have accustomed us at times to not even hitting the marker with the first shot at 100 metres.

We do however suggest, as is good practice, to take a test shot before using the Calonox 2 in the field associated with the scope. If the weapon-attack-lens combination is particularly weak, resulting in slight vertical shifts - in the order of a maximum of 4-5cm at 100m - of the point of impact due to the effect of the weight of the viewer on the optic lens, the Calonox 2 APP (Leica 2Hunt, downloadable free of charge on smartphones) offers the possibility of vertically correcting the point of impact, which is also useful if you wish to zero the Calonox 2 at a distance other than the optic zeroing distance.

Leica Calonox 2 Sight prepares for the night - we recommend compliance.

The other main Elements of Excellence

The Calonox 2 Sight brings with it a number of impressive innovations and firsts, and here we detail the most important ones for the user.

  • French Lynred 640×480 pixel 12nm thermal sensor, the most advanced 640 on the market, detection 2300m.

The Calonox 2 is a German product, manufactured with European partners. The thermal sensor is manufactured by specialised companies and only one company in Europe, the French company Lynred. Leica has adopted Lynred's most advanced sensor for its new thermal clip-on, the 640×480 at 12nm per pixel, designed for military use and harsh conditions, which offers guaranteed durability even after thousands of sessions of use. The maximum signalling distance of the conventionally 180cm high hot element is an impressive 2300 metres.

  • Unique 42mm GASIR® lens instead of Germanium, specially developed for the Calonox 2 for maximum depth of field and focus stability

The lenses of thermal viewers are generally made of Germanium, an element that is sensitive to heat. When the viewer is hot, using a thermal viewer one clearly perceives the need to continue focusing the image, even without changing the distance. GASIR® is a synthetic material that is insensitive to heat up to very high temperatures, and has much better characteristics than Germanium for the performance of a thermal imager lens. GASIR® is the material from which Franco-Canadian Umicore produced the Calonox 2 lens, specifically for Leica. Thanks to this, when looking through the new Leica viewfinder you will have the feeling of focus stability and depth of field that you are accustomed to having in high-quality conventional binoculars. Depth of field (i.e. the ability to focus well even on subjects of different distances) is crucial in order to highlight, for example, an animal at a distance of 600 metres in the same frame as one at 300 metres): if you compare the Calonox 2 with other instruments on this aspect, the difference is enormous.

  • Unique in that it allows the entire screen to be seen even 15 cm from the eye.

Another great innovation, which is a dream for those accustomed to using a thermal viewer for observing. The Calonox 2 Sight has such a large exit pupil (28mm), that the entire screen can be seen even if the eye is held 15 centimetres from the eyepiece. This simplifies the action of quickly observing a target, because there is no need to position the instrument precisely centred on the pupil, but above all it gives the eye an enormous relief because it allows the 'television' to be held far away when desired, without losing detail. Using the viewer in the field for a few hours, the sensation is fantastic and more perceptible than one might imagine from reading this article.

In the field, with the Calonox 2 at eye level in this photo you can see the whole screen perfectly.

  • Unique with the same -large- screen for aiming and observing

The screen of the Calonox 2 is large and of high quality, a 1280 x 960 pixel OLED. The Calonox is not the only instrument on the market to mount a large, high-quality screen, but it is the only clip-on to mount it so that it appears to the eye in a large size, almost like that of an observation screen. The novelty of the Calonox 2 is also that the screen always remains the same and of the same size, i.e. large, both when you use it to observe and when you use it in combination with the optics to aim, without the need to adjust the menu. Great performance and time saving. Being a clip-on, the magnification is 1x, which allows you to observe with a huge field of view, with the possibility of zooming to 2x or using the additional 2.5x eyepiece with super-compact dioptre adjustment from RUSAN that we describe below.

  • Extreme ease of use

The Calonox 2 is easy to use, very easy. The ignition positioned on the eyepiece and already set up for day and night use is impossible to miss, the telemetry text is different from the others, and the menu is in Italian, very intuitive despite the various functions available. The Leica2hunt App, also in Italian, adds further simplicity and warns whenever there is an update to download to improve the Calonox 2 or add functions.

The Calonox 2 Sight is switched on with a dial on the eyepiece, which is already preset to day or night external conditions.

The button closest to the eyepiece is used for zooming or telemetry, but in a future update of the app it will be possible to dedicate it to any other function as desired

Everything is done with the three buttons reminiscent of the previous Calonox Sight.

The manual high grip rubber focus is on the lens.

  • Unprecedented ability to highlight the warm animal in the environment, and LIO (Leica Image Optimisation) software to better represent even cold details

The French Lynred thermal sensor, of which the Calonox Sight mounts the most high-performance and advanced version, is known to make the animal stand out very clearly from the other elements in the environment. Looking through the Calonox 2, one can immediately see the brilliance and strength of the contrast that characterises the animal, which stands out sharply - literally like a light bulb - against any surroundings, including snow, and even when the sun has already risen. The photo opposite shows two roe deer at around 1,200 metres, which can be clearly seen by the contrast between the shaded areas and the light areas that are in the sun.

At the same time, the now famous Leica LIO (Leica Image Optimisation) software, borrowed from the Leica photographic black and white, offers a perfect grey scale to characterise cold details well, thus also bringing the animal into its environment in the best possible way to give references for later binoculars during daylight observation. One of the pillars of Leica's thermal quality is therefore reinforced in the immediacy of capturing the warm subject.

  • Unique with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for fast and powerful transmission, integrated photo and video

The Calonox 2 Sight takes photos and videos, directly from the instrument, which can be downloaded wirelessly to the smartphone or by cable to a PC or Mac, or from September 2024 also via the Leica2hunt APP on the smartphone (an APP that from September 24 will offer a free update with which it will be possible to see live on the smartphone what the Calonox sees). The 32 Gigabyte internal memory is particularly generous, but the instrument's power in terms of data transfer and accessibility can also be seen in the simultaneous presence of Bluetooth to ensure fast connection (even with the remote control for telemetering or taking photos and videos), and Wi-fi to guarantee the range of large data to be transferred.

The central screen of the Leica 2Hunt APP

  • Unique without shutter, no need to calibrate the screen anymore

A great subtlety, which is certainly annoying and which only the world leader in top-quality photography could introduce, is the elimination of the shutter, i.e. in practice that split-second click of the image disappearing that thermals pay for when calibrating the screen. Vision with the Calonox is constant and without the slightest interruption. If in the long run or for any reason the vision should deteriorate in quality, there is however a function available in the menu, called NUC (Non Uniformity Correction), which resets the image quality in an instant.

  • Upgradable online with improvements in the coming years, it remains state-of-the-art

Yet another reason to choose the Calonox 2 is that the instrument and its APP are designed to host downloadable online updates, so that those who have a Calonox 2 will always have a state-of-the-art instrument for years to come, downloading innovations and improvements directly from the APP.

  • Unique design and absolute robustness, watertight and nitrogen-filled

The Calonox 2 is unmistakable due to its unique Leica design, which presents it from the first glance as something different from the Chinese and Belarusian clip-ons on the market. Made in Germany Leica has very strict production criteria, from the choice of materials to manufacturing tolerances, resulting in very robust and reliable products in the armoury. For the first time, the Calonox 2 is also filled with nitrogen like conventional binoculars and spotting scopes, to ensure further reliability and watertightness, even if it ends up under water.

  • Highest image refresh rate (60HZ)

Generally, the best thermals go up to 50 Herz out of 60 in image refresh rate, with a very slight delay therefore being appreciated in fast moving observations. The Calonox 2 excels in this respect too, with 60 Herz and images generated at a natural speed, like an observation made with the naked eye.

  • The most efficient service

Leica is one of the most customer-focused companies, who know that if they lose an easily replaceable part of their instrument they can receive it at home free of charge via courier service, and above all who know that they have to budget a maximum of three weeks to get their repaired instrument back, in case of problems or defects that require service. In an environment where you hear about months on major brand instruments, the certainty of being able to count on a fast and efficient service is extremely important.

  • Light and compact (590-630g in weight and 13.9cm in length)

Of course, there are also lighter instruments, sacrificing manual focusing on the lens, forgoing the external rubberizing and shoulder strap attachment. For a 42mm lens, with the functions and materials of the Calonox 2, however, even in absolute terms 590 grams (630 for the LRF model with rangefinder) is a very good weight. The length of only 14 centimetres is a masterpiece of Leica's engineers and designs; in the hand it is really small and very handy.

  • 11 hours of internal rechargeable battery life (6 hours in the LRF model with intensive rangefinder use)

The internal rechargeable battery ensures the integrity of its rechargeability for thousands of cycles of use and provides additional robustness to the Calonox 2, compared to instruments with interchangeable batteries. A full charge, which takes about 90 minutes with a USB wall socket (but can also be charged in the car or on a PC) lasts 11 hours in the model without rangefinder, minimum 6 in the LRF model with rangefinder, if it is used intensively. By means of an external powerbank, the instrument can also be used with a completely discharged battery.

  • Dedicated app in Italian, developed by Infinum (KR) ad hoc, total customisation and upgradeability over time

The free Leica2Hunt APP for smartphones and tablets, created in Croatia by specialist Infinum for Leica, is a very easy-to-use, comprehensive and continuously updated tool with improvements and innovations for free download to your Calonox 2, to manage photos and videos and to customise your Calonox 2 to your liking, more and more as customisation opportunities are added in the coming months. Via the APP it will be possible in the future to transfer new functions, enhancements and updates to your Calonox 2, without the need for cables. Through the APP it is also possible to compensate for the very rare deviations of the point of impact due to the weakness of the optics attachment in relation to the weight of the viewer, or for example to decide to zero the viewer at 100 metres while leaving the optics zeroed at 200. It is so simple and intuitive that there is no need to explain how it works.

Refinements that enrich the user experience

Every high-end product adds to the great elements of excellence a series of details that are perhaps less indispensable, but appreciated by those who discover them, and which complete the product and make it even better.

The Calonox 2 Sight has several, the main ones being these:

  • Automatic switch-off and switch-on with tilt

As on the Magnus and Fortis scopes and the Tempus 2 red dot, Leica also wanted to install on the Calonox 2 Sight the function (which can be switched on or off) that puts it on stand-by and automatically switches it back on when the instrument is tilted vertically (at the neck, mounted on the rifle's optics when it is resting) and then back to the horizontal position. Although the battery has a long life, an additional saving mechanism is appreciable. The function can be found in the Settings/Customisation menu as Auto display off

  • Three Standby functions to save battery power

Although the switch-on speed is very good, the Calonox 2 is still a thermal viewer that, like all, needs a short warm-up time. For this reason, Leica has equipped the Calonox 2 with a multiple and very intelligent stand-by system. When the instrument is switched off, for example, it remains on and dormant for one minute, allowing the user to change his or her mind without having to wait for the time needed to switch it back on again from off. Alternatively, it is possible to set the function that automatically switches it off at an inclination of more than 70°, to switch it back on in an instant when it is returned to horizontal (see above). You can also choose the function that switches it off automatically, to prevent forgetting to switch it on from draining the battery. In the Settings/Customisation menu, Auto power off. The time after which it switches off is set in the APP.

  • Customisable day and night preset ignition system

The Calonox 2's ignition system is reminiscent of the Leica Magnus spotting scopes, with a ring around the eyepiece equipped with icons of the sun and moon, symbolising ignition in day or night mode. These settings not only give the ignition an extremely user-friendly character, but also offer pre-set typical instrument settings for day and night use. These settings can be customised with the instrument's APP.

  • Infinite colour palettes, customisable as desired.

The Calonox 2 was born with 6 colour palettes, among which, next to the classic black and white, the greenish one stands out, which is typical of night vision goggles and is the colour mode that least strains the eye when observing at night. As the APP develops, however, users will in future be able to choose their preferred colour palette from an infinite number of colour combinations.

  • Preset and customisable winter, summer and rain modes.

In the menu of the Calonox 2 there are, preset, 'summer' and 'winter' modes to have the instrument already at its best in the case of very hot or very cold outside temperatures, and the 'rain' mode to eliminate from the image the negative effect (technically called 'noise') due to water drops between the observer and the subject. These modes are also customisable as desired with the APP.

  • Menu character size adjustable 50%-100%.

A very useful function is to reduce the size of the menu to 50% of the standard if you want to be able to read it even while observing through a rifle scope at medium-high magnifications.

  • Flip Cap Tenebraex standard on lens

Not indispensable, but very much appreciated, are also the flip caps that come with the standard Calonox, to cover and uncover the lens of the Calonox 2 with a snap mechanism, as one does with a rifle scope. Manufactured in Canada by Tenebraex, synonymous with quality and specialisation in this type of accessory. To attach the flip-cap, simply push it into place after removing the grommet protecting the lens with your fingernail.

The Calonox 2 Sight options

The Calonox 2 also has some high-quality accessories that complement it depending on the intended use. This is why they are outside the standard equipment and can be purchased separately.

  • Leica remote control for photo-video or rangefinder, customisable

The Calonox 2 has as an option supplied by Leica a small remote control, ideally positioned on the fore-end of the rifle, to operate the rangefinder or the photo-video function more conveniently when the instrument is mounted in front of the optic. With the APP, it is also possible to customise the functions that respond to the remote control.

  • Rusan adapters for mounting on the rifle scope lens

Anyone who uses a thermal clip-on knows that an adapter is required to use it in conjunction with a rifle scope. Those who know Rusan know that they produce adapters of the highest quality. There are two types of adapters, the same ones that go on the Calonox Sight first model, with the exception of the threading on the eyepiece, which is 52mm on Calonox and 43mm on Calonox 2:

  1. One-piece, to be screwed onto the eyepiece thread of the Calonox 2, and then threaded onto the objective of the riflescope. It is called ARM 43 - ... (where the three dots stand for the outer diameter of the optics on which it is to be mounted). It's custom-made for each scope's outer diameter, but it forces you to observe with your eye at a distance and to switch from observing to aiming it also forces you to make sure the mounting is precise to avoid seeing the image tilted
  2. Two-piece quick release, with an MCR M43 ring to be screwed onto the eyepiece thread of the Calonox 2, which bayonets onto the MAR-... part (where the three dots stand for the outer diameter of the optic on which it is to be mounted) to be threaded onto the objective of the pointing optic.

For those who already have adapters from the first Calonox Sight model, in the first case an adapter ring is sufficient to bring the thread from 52 to 43mm, in the second case the ring that screws onto the eyepiece thread of the Calonox Sight 2 must be changed.

The Calonox Sight with its bayonet ring snaps onto the Rusan adapter that was previously placed on the scope lens.

  • 2.5x eyepiece with Rusan dioptre adjustment for screen magnification and adjustment without glasses

A new high quality accessory that is also compatible with the Calonox Sight first model, 6cm by 90 grams, very small. It can be bayonet-mounted onto the ring of the Rusan adapter that screws onto the Calonox eyepiece, or it can be push-fitted with a rubber ring inside the one-piece adapter screwed onto the Calonox eyepiece. The optics are really high quality and magnify the screen of the Calonox Sight, Sight SE and Sight 2 by 2.5x. It has dioptric adjustment and therefore allows the menu to be read well without glasses even for those who wear them, as well as magnifying the screen with the quality of an optical and not digital magnification, to better appreciate the details of what is being observed.

Rusan 2.5x bayonet-mounted eyepiece on a Calonox 2 Sight LRF

  • Recknagel attachment for Picatinny slide

The Calonox Sight 2 can be mounted on the objective of the rifle scope via the Rusan adapters, or attached in front of the objective of the scope itself if you have an extended Picatinny rail, via an ERATAC quick release mount manufactured by Recknagel. The perfect fit of the Calonox Sight 2 on the optic with the Rusan adapter is guaranteed, but the sled solution makes those who appreciate a more tactical approach happy.

The differences between Calonox Sight, Sight SE and Calonox 2 Sight

Calonox 2 Sight Irf with rangefinder vs Calonox Sight, for size comparison

Calonox Sight and Sight SE, i.e. the two versions of the first model of Leica Calonox Sight, are almost identical, except for the lack of possibility in the second to double the size of the screen for observing, and the non-connectability of the same with the APP for smartphones, which allows the Calonox Sight to be collimated without acting on the instrument. Calonox Sight is considered to be the best clip-on thermal imager on the market in 2023 and has been discontinued, while Calonox Sight SE is the undisputed champion in its price range.

Even though the design deliberately expresses a certain continuity, the new Calonox 2 Sight and the new Calonox 2 Sight LRF with rangefinder are two completely new instruments that differ in every detail from their predecessors, starting with the design, which was born totally in Leica from scratch. Despite the fact that the initial models are of very high quality and performance, the differences with the new ones are enormous, so much so as to place them in a category that cannot be compared with the other thermal clip-ons on the market.

Here is a summary of the main differences and novelties of the Calonox 2 Sight:

  • The Chinese 384×288-pixel 17nm thermal sensor in the Sight /Sight SE is in the French 640×480-pixel 12nm 2 Sight
  • The instrument design is in the fully Leica 2 Sight, down to the smallest detail, without any Chinese influence
  • The screen is changed from 1024×768 pixels to Oled 1280×960 pixels, from zoomable for observing and reducible for aiming (only reduced for aiming in the Sight SE) to always large.
  • The dimensions decrease from 16.5cm in length to 13.9 and the weight from 685 grams to 590 grams (630 with rangefinder)
  • the new Calonox 2 Sight aims where the scope reticle aims, whereas the Calonox Sight, like all clip-ons, needs to check that it is collimated with the optic.
  • The new Calonox 2 Sight has an LRF version with integrated rangefinder up to 1200m
  • The new Calonox 2 Sight takes photos and videos and has internal memory, while the Sight and Sight SE models take photos and videos, but connected by cable to an external miniDVR with screen, which has video to see what you see in the viewer.
  • The lens is no longer Germanium like the other thermals, but GASIR, for greater depth of field and focus stability.
  • The APP is totally new and equipped with various functions, and allows the Calonox 2 Sight to be updated online
  • Water resistance changes from water resistant to water proof, nitrogen filled
  • The image refresh rate goes from 50 to 60hz, i.e. totally at natural speed, and the shutter that calibrates the screen has been eliminated.
  • The viewing distance from the eyepiece has been increased from 5cm to over 10, with the possibility of viewing the entire screen at a distance that does not fatigue the eyes and makes it much more immediate to get in line with the image
  • The Calonox 2 has automatic switch-off and switch-on with tilt, 4 standby functions and a new, customisable day and night preset switch-on system
  • The Calonox 2 has infinite, customisable colour palettes and preset, customisable winter, summer and rain modes.
  • The new Calonox 2 has a 50%-150% adjustable font size menu and is fitted with the Tenebraex Flip Cap as standard on the lens
