The research and development process of the ZERO press allowed Area 419 to test the effectiveness of many reloading products. The intent was to isolate the variables and make sure to test the press and not just the dies/shellholders/etc. One of the main causes of variability in reloading ammunition was found to be the clamping rings on the dies, as most rings on the market are held in place by a set screw or are of the split/clamp type. These rings are inherently inaccurate in precision reloading for design reasons, as they must be attached to the dies for constant removal/replacement in single-stage presses. Consequently, Area 419 decided to develop its own specific rings; their main features are:
- LARGE DIAMETER - a larger contact area with the turret head means that the ring will align with the press and force the die straight, instead of clinging to the die and aligning at will. The total thickness of the rings is .500″ and the outer diameter is 1.685″.
- MORE THREAD ENGAGEMENT - The rings have a thread engagement of .350″, which is 15-25% more than common die clamping rings. This translates into approximately one full thread of additional engagement, increasing the ability of the ring to square the die to the press.
- INNER KEY HOOK - in conventional clamping rings, the use of the clamping key is reserved for the outer surface of the ring. In a multi-stage head, the use of tools is made difficult by the limited space available, with the consequent disadvantages. This ring has been designed with an internal key engagement precisely to avoid this problem.
- PRECISION STAINLESS STEEL MANUFACTURING - The thread and bottom surface of the ring are machined from 17-4PH stainless steel in a single operation, resulting in perfectly square surfaces to align the die.
