The ELD-X® (Extremely low drag - eXpanding) bullet is a technologically advanced, precision-matched bullet for all-around hunting, featuring the highest ballistic coefficient in its class and capable of controlled expansion at ALL practical hunting distances. All manufacturers' conventional polymer tips melt during flight. Hornady® engineers have found that all materials in which the tips of high ballistic coefficient tapered bullets are made melt during flight and deform. Although this is not a major issue in medium ballistic coefficient bullets with traditional ogive for hunting, aerodynamic heat reduces the ballistic coefficient and decreases accuracy, particularly at long distances (over 365 meters). To mitigate this effect, Hornady® identified a heat-resistant polymer and developed the patented Heat Shield® tip. This revolutionary tip creates the perfect apex for the bullet, with exceptionally consistent results from bullet to bullet and lot to lot. At conventional distances (0-365 m), the ELD-X® projectile is designed for continuous expansion all the way through. Upon impact, the thin apical section of the bullet collapses to the thickest part of the jacket, where the Interlock ring operates to hold the core and jacket together. The more massive part of the projectile then continues its travel further facilitating expansion, resulting in very high lethality.
